The East India Company established its own army in India, which not only included local men, but the officers were from the British Army. However, by 1857, resentment had started to grow against the British in India and rebellions were taking place. By 1876, after peace had been restored for 20 years, Queen Victoria was declared to be Empress of India, reinforcing the need for British Troops to have a presence on the sub-continent.
