Supplied by Heritage Cartography. The map shows Harrogate in its very early development as a spa town, in fact it could hardly be called a town at all, just a collection of elegant buildings set amid the fields and woods. Clearly seen are the two main areas of High Harrogate and Low Harrogate, the former ringing the “village green” of Church Square at the eastern end of The Stray, the latter clustering in the “valley of sulphur wells” around the newly built Royal Baths. Two fascinating features are the site of the original terminus railway station at what is now the Leeds Road roundabout, and the old racecourse on the main Stray.
