The inner town presents itself on the map as an open well laid out urban community served by the recently constructed magnificent railway station. Prominent is the Cloth Hall, the local centre of the woollen trade whose production in the area was prolific and expanding at the time.

Industry is predominantly situated along the river and canal banks and mainly consists of woollen mills and associated dye works; a foundry, limekilns and chemical works may also be found. The surrounding area away from the town is remarkably well populated amid a close network of roads and lanes, pasture and woodland.

It gives the impression of being a rather green and pleasant landscape of wealth and grace. Even the Union Workhouse at the north of the town is relatively small for the period.
