Newspapers are a quite different source to most of those used by family historians. They respected no county boundaries, and by their ephemeral nature it is amazing that any have survived at all.

The long-awaited second edition of this invaluable guide lists all newspapers published locally in England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man between 1750 and 1920 (except for titles which lasted for less than four years). The basis for the guide is the catalogue of the British Newspaper Library at Colindale, supplemented by information provided by libraries and record offices throughout the country.

Indexes to personal names or obituaries, births, marriages and deaths are also noted where known.
