PRIME is a Bedfordshire FHS compilation of the individual surname indexes of 80 published volumes of transcriptions of the baptism, marriage and burial registers, collated with the bishops’ transcripts, of all 130 Bedfordshire parishes from commencement up to 1812.

The program runs on PCs operating under the Windows 95 or later operating system. It is simply installed by following the on-screen instructions after inserting the CD-ROM in the drive, clicking on Run of the computer desktop Start menu and entering ‘cd-rom drive letter set up’.

Running the program reveals the Find & Select Surnames screen where the surname is entered either with ‘loose’ (broad range of possible variants) or ‘tight’ (restricted variants) matching.

Clicking on Show produces a list of matching surnames in alphabetical order. In loose matching, Pribolde is a variant of Probert for instance, but whatever the matching chosen, you are able to select all or any of those names presented (together with the parishes in which the names occur) to be viewed as a list within the Select Names/Parishes screen. Clicking on a name/parish combination from this list produces a further list with the Volume number, Parish code and Page numbers. With this information a search may then be initiated for the full transcription of the register entry or the relevant microfiche.
