Produced by the Parish Register Transcription Society. Often a forgotten resource of family history, Protestant nonconformist registers are an indispensable source for genealogical information where they survive. This compilation of registers that were surrendered in 1837-8 for authentication and now in The National Archives, and a handful of other nonconformist registers for Sussex in the East and West Sussex Record Offices, was originally made in 1977-80 and published then as individual chapel registers. Most surviving Sussex pre 1837 registers for a variety of denominations are included here in alphabetical order with a full search facility for names, occupations and places. Nonconformist registers tend to cover a much wider area than Church of England registers, chapels and meetings tending to draw their membership from a wide hinterland. They also include, in some instances, whole families being baptised in 'job lots', adult baptisms, and often give the occupation of fathers and maiden surname of mothers. The easing of legal restraints on nonconformist meetings often led to adults choosing to dissent from Church of England doctrine and practice and turn to alternative religious affiliation, either in the short or long term. Transcribed by Michael J. Burchall, BA(Hons), FSG, from the original records in the East & West Sussex Record Offices, The National Archives & The Sussex Archaeological Society. PDF Document fully searchable using Adobe Reader Search or Find function.
