For each type of record it provides background information on how they were compiled and what information was contained, and on which categories of people. It also provides background on the social history of County Donegal and how this history has affected the keeping and survival of records. Donegal families are an interesting mix of native Irish families and of Scots-Irish who came to the county from the 17th century. It experienced a high level of emigration both to North America and also to Scotland and North of England.
