Background Historical Information

After the 1754 Marriage Act, baptisms were usually recorded in the same volume as burials. The situation changes after Rose’s Act; or the Parochial Registration Act 1812-13, which required the church to formalise all entries in the Parish Registers. This stipulated printed books, with every entry of baptism, marriage and burial giving the following standard information:

  • Date of baptism
  • Child’s given name
  • Parents’ given names and surnames
  • Abode or residence
  • Trade or profession of the father
  • Name of the officiating minister
  • Sometimes the date of birth is also recorded.
