In February 1798, with the imminent threat of invasion by French forces, returns were ordered to be made of all able-bodied men between the ages of fifteen and sixty years who were not already serving in a military capacity.  Lists were also to be made of the number of draught horses, waggons and carts and their owners and of those occupying wind and water corn mills.  This booklet contains a transcription of the returns for the Three Hundreds of Ashendon, listing over 2,500 persons giving their residence, occupation and, in some cases, notes concerning either status or eligibility. The Three Hundreds of Ashendon (comprising Ashendon, Ixhill and Waddesdon Hundreds) contains the following parishes: Ashendon; Aston Sandford; Boarstall; Brill; Chearsley; Chilton; East Claydon; Middle Claydon; Long Crendon; Dorton; Grandborough; Grendon Underwood; Hogshaw; Ickford; Ilmer; Kingsey; Ludgershall with Kingswood; Fleet Marston; North Marston; Oakley; Oving; Pitchcott; Quainton with Shipton Lee; Quarrendon; Shabbington; Towersey; Waddesdon with Westcott and Woodham Cott and Woodham; Lower or Nether Winchendon; Worminghall; Wotton Underwood.
