In February 1798, with the imminent threat of invasion by French forces, returns were ordered to be made of all able-bodied men between the ages of fifteen and sixty years who were not already serving in a military capacity.  Lists were also to be made of the number of draught horses, waggons and carts and their owners and of those occupying wind and water corn mills.  This booklet contains a transcription of the returns for the Borough and Three Hundreds of Buckingham, listing over 2,600 persons giving their residence, occupation and, in some cases, notes concerning either status or eligibility. The Three Hundreds of Buckingham comprises the three ancient hundreds of Stodfald, Rovelai and Lamva and contains the following parishes: Addington; Adstock; Akeley; Barton Hartshorn; Beachampton; Biddlesden; Buckingham; Caversfield, Chetwode; Edgcott; Foscott; Hillesden; Leckhampstead; Lillingstone Dayrell; Lillingstone Lovell; Luffield Abbey; Maids' Moreton; Marsh Gibbon; Padbury; Preston Bissett; Radclive; Shalstone; Steeple Claydon; Stowe; Thornborough; Thornton; Tingewick; Turweston; Twyford with Charndon and Poundon; Water Stratford; Westbury. Note that Caversfield was transferred to Oxfordshire by Statutes 2 & 3 Will. IV, cap. 64 (1832), 7 & 8 Vict. cap. 61 (1844) and that Lillingstone Lovell in the hundred of Ploughley, Oxfordshire was transferred to Buckinghamshire by Statute 7 & 8 Vict. cap. 61.
