In February 1798, with the imminent threat of invasion by French forces, returns were ordered to be made of all able-bodied men between the ages of fifteen and sixty years who were not already serving in a military capacity.  Lists were also to be made of the number of draught horses, waggons and carts and their owners and of those occupying wind and water corn mills.  This publication contains a transcription of the returns for the Three Hundreds of Cottesloe, listing over 3,600 persons giving their residence, occupation and, in some cases, notes concerning either status or eligibility. The Three Hundreds of Cottesloe comprises the three Domesday hundreds of Cottesloe, Mursley and Yardley, which were grouped together by the latter part of the 13th century.  The following parishes are contained within it:  Aston Abbots, Cheddington, Cholesbury, Creslow, Cublington, Drayton Beauchamp, Drayton Parslow, Dunton, Edlesborough, Grove, Hardwick with Weedon, Hawridge, Hoggeston, Great Horwood, Ivinghoe, Linslade, Little Horwood, Marsworth, Mentmore, Mursley, Pitstone, Slapton, Soulbury, Stewkley, Swanbourne, Tattenhoe, Whaddon with Nash, Whitchurch, Wing, Wingrave, Winslow.
