Shalden (VB090) is a comprehensive study of the history of this rural Hampshire village and the parish of St Peter and St Paul.  It is located three miles north-west of Alton west of the B3349 and east of the A339. At time of the Domesday Book the area was known as Seldene.  The original church was demolished when the new one was built in 1863.  The manor was originally in the MAUDITT family, later passing through the KNIGHT and WOOD families.  Fanny ADAMS was also reputed to have been murdered within the parish bounds in 1867.  Other surnames of ancient families in the parish mentioned include other KNIGHT families, plus HOLLOWAY, SIMPSON, HIBBERD, WHITE, ALLEN and SMITH.
