[Download] This is one of a series of finding aids for the genealogist and local historian. It contains an index to the people listed as owners or occupiers of land in the tithe apportionments, which were drawn up in the 1840’s. The books in this series provide a pointer to the parishes where individuals owned or occupied property. Tithes were applicable to all classes of people, so the names included in the index cover a wide range of people – agricultural laboureres, artisans, farmers, professional people and landed gentry. Because of this broad coverage, the tithes are a very useful way to locate families in the early part of the 1840’s. Most of the apportionments were drawn up in the period 1840-1844, but some were prepared as early as 1839 and some not until the early 1850s.

This volume in the series covers parishes in the Orford Deanery in East Suffolk - Aldeburgh, Benhall, Blaxhall, Bruisyard, Chillesford, Cransford, Farnham, Friston, Great Glemham, Little Glemham, Iken, Orford, Rendham, Snape .
