West Sussex Sussex Settlement Certificates and Bonds 1658-1853

Ref: SSX-MJB18

Supplied by the Sussex Family History Group

The records that are calendared and edited in this work comprise all the surviving bonds and certificates from the parish collections deposited in the West Sussex Record Office that pertain to parishes within the pre-1974 county.
In 1974 a number of parishes on the eastern border of the then East Sussex were transferred to West Sussex, and although the records of these parishes are now deposited at Chichester, the settlement certificates and bonds were included in an earlier work, Eastern Sussex Settlement Certificates and Bonds 1651-1834 (Parish Register Transcription Society, CD, 2008); they are also listed in N Pilbeam and I Nelson, Mid Sussex Poor Law Records, 1601-1835 (Sussex Record Society, vol.83, Lewes, 2000).

In addition, all Poor Law material now at Chichester is listed on the Sussex Record Society website, Poor Law Database.

Further material on West Sussex can be found in M J Burchall, The Sussex Poor, 1661-1800 (Parish Register Transcription Society, CD, 2008) being the edited transcripts of all material covering the Old Poor Law which came before Sussex Quarter Sessions that includes much additional material relating to settlement across the whole of Sussex.

Transcribed by Michael J. Burchall, BA(Hons), FSG, from the original records in the West Sussex Record Office.
